DJI Goggles Integra vs. DJI Goggles 2：What makes them different?

Design

Now let’s dive into what makes these DJI Integra goggles so special. The design is quite sleek and light on the face.

However, I have to say that I’m not a big fan of the padding on the outside. Yes, it keeps things lightweight, but it doesn’t provide much comfort if you like to wear your goggles close to your head.

I’ve been spoiled by the upgraded foam in my FPV Goggles Version 2, which is great for longer flight sessions. Still, I appreciate the smaller design of the Integra.

I like the integrated battery in the back. Its placement helps balance the weight between the front and back of your head. The back also has the same hard padding with a curved design to fit your head comfortably.

Because the battery is in the back, there’s an integrated wire that runs around the right side of the headband. The left side of the headband is detachable, making it easier to put on and take off the Integra goggles.

For a snug fit, the part of the goggle that houses the battery has a knob you can turn to adjust the headband’s tightness.

It makes a satisfying click when you turn it, adding a touch of style to these goggles.

Now, the part of the goggles that rests on your face houses all the buttons and controls.

At the top you’ll find the antennas, which you can flip down when you’re packing them in your bag and up when you’re flying.

Below the right antenna, there’s a 5D button that lets you navigate menus and make selections, along with a back button for further menu navigation.

I also noticed something interesting on the top of the Goggles Integra: there’s a loop for a top strap that goes over your head and connects to the other top loop on the battery. The Goggles 2 don’t have this feature.

The sides of the Goggles Integra are relatively plain; there’s not much to see. On the right side, however, you’ll find a battery indicator to check the remaining power in the internal battery.

On the bottom of the goggles, you’ll find a USB-C port for firmware updates and charging the onboard battery, as well as the power button. To turn the goggles on, quickly press and hold the power button until you hear a beep.

On the bottom of the goggles are lens adjusters for changing the interpupillary distance. This allows you to move the parts you’re looking through from side to side, from 56 to 72 millimeters apart, so you can focus properly on the single-screen display.

DJI also placed the micro SD card slot here, between the lenses, so you can record what you see while using the goggles.

Overall, the DJI Goggles Integra are comfortable and offer all the functionality you need to fly your drone.

Personally, I like the built-in battery pack because it’s all in one piece. I can just put it on, turn on the goggles, and I’m good to go.

There’s no extra setup required; everything is conveniently integrated into a single unit.

In terms of design and new features, there are a few changes to the DJI Goggles Integra compared to the Goggles 2:

MicroSD slot: The microSD card slot has been moved and is now located inside between the two lenses.

This is where the proximity sensor used to be on the Goggles 2. The proximity sensor on the Goggles 2 automatically turned off the screen when the goggle was removed to conserve battery life, but this feature is no longer present on the Integra.

However, the Integra can accept microSD cards up to 512GB, while the Goggles 2 supported up to 256GB.

Power Button: The power button has been moved to the lower right side of the goggles, near the USB-C charging port. It’s easily accessible with your thumb, and is also used to pair the goggles with the drone.

This change doesn’t make a huge difference, but it does add a bit of convenience.

Antennas: The antennas on the DJI Goggles Integra are slightly longer than those on the Goggles 2.

They also have small rubberized pads to protect the drone’s body when the antennas are folded. Unlike the Goggles 2, these antennas are not removable, so you can’t replace them with third-party antennas.

Removed features: Several features from Goggles 2 have been removed from the Integra model.

The LED lights on the sides of the Goggles 2 that indicated the channel in use have been eliminated. While these lights were useful for quickly identifying the channel in multi-pilot scenarios, they aren’t considered essential.

In addition, the headphone mini-jack output has been removed from the Integra, so you can no longer use headphones with these goggles.

Price

Despite being the earlier model, the Goggles 2 are actually more expensive than the Goggles Integra, whether you buy them separately or as part of the DJI Avata package. There’s a $150 price difference.

DJI also offers a V2 version of their larger FPV goggles that is even cheaper at $429. However, these are currently marked as out of stock on their website, so the two goggles we’re discussing are your primary choices.

Battery

The main difference is that the DJI Goggles Integra does not have a built-in battery. Instead, you must use the external Goggles 2 battery, which connects to the goggles via a USB-C cable.

Some people attach these external batteries to their head straps for convenience. It’s worth noting that the Goggles Integra’s built-in battery actually has a larger capacity than the battery DJI sells for use with the Goggles 2.

As I mentioned earlier, I personally prefer the integrated battery in the Goggles Integra because it’s all in one piece, making it easy to put on and manage.

With the Goggles 2, on the other hand, you have the goggles, a cord, and a separate battery pack. The advantage of this design, however, is that you can use these goggles with multiple batteries without worrying about recharging them on the go.

So if you have multiple spare batteries, you can simply swap out the dead one for a fresh one and keep flying.

Of course, you can charge the Integra Goggles on the fly using the USB-C port, but that means dealing with a wire hanging from your head, which may be a little less convenient for some users.

New interface

The DJI Goggles Integra has a new interface with physical buttons that replace the touchpad found on the Goggles 2.

It now has a mini-joystick for menu navigation and confirmation, and a “back” button for going back, similar to the original DJI Goggles V2 that came with the DJI FPV drone.

In our experience, while the touchpad provided a nice experience, the two physical buttons offer greater precision and efficiency in use. The software interface remains consistent, with the same clear and straightforward menus as the Goggles 2.

Weight

While the DJI Goggles Integra may look heavier on paper, weighing in at 410 grams compared to the 290 grams of the Goggles 2, it’s important to note that this weight difference is due to the battery built into the headband.

When comparing the two goggles with the same configuration, and taking into account the total weight of the Goggles 2 with the external battery and its cable, the two models are approximately the same weight. In fact, the Integra Goggles may be slightly lighter in this comparison.

An (almost) identical screen

Both the DJI Goggles Integra and Goggles 2 have nearly identical screens in terms of size (0.49 inch), resolution (1920 x 1080), and refresh rate (up to 100 Hz). This means that the image quality on both models is consistently sharp, bright, and detailed.

One minor difference to note is the FOV. The Goggles Integra has a FOV of 44°, which on paper is slightly smaller than the Goggles 2’s FOV of 51°. However, in practice, users have reported that the Goggles Integra offers better visibility of the entire screen, with sharper information on the sides compared to the Goggles 2.

View settings

The Integra goggles still allow for interpupillary distance adjustment, but with small sliders instead of wheels. The adjustment range remains the same, from 56 to 72mm. The main difference is in the diopter adjustment.

Unlike the Goggles 2, which has a built-in diopter adjustment, the Goggles Integra offers a separate set of corrective lenses that provide the same range of correction, from -8.0D to +2.0D. Users must manually mount these lenses, which is a little less convenient, but still effective.

Other Features

The DJI Goggles Integra has a built-in GPS function. This GPS is primarily used to transmit the mandatory US ID number without the need to connect to a smartphone, saving time. It’s important to note that this feature is most useful for users in the United States, as the ID number requirement is not in effect in Europe.

However, the Goggles Integra have lost the DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) functionality that was present in the Goggles 2.

DLNA allows users to stream video from a smartphone to the goggles, essentially using them as a VR headset for watching movies or shows. With the Goggles Integra, this specific feature is no longer available.

However, you can still play videos stored on the Integra Goggles from a memory card, although audio is not supported due to the lack of a headphone jack on this new version.

Compatibilities

On the bottom of the module, you’ll find the upgrade cable interface, a mini-HDMI output interface, and a TF card slot. The TF card slot allows direct insertion of TF cards for DVR recording, while the other interfaces provide advanced connectivity options.

In addition to the module, the HDZero VRX package includes various accessories such as a reference board, an HDMI transmission cable, a power cord, and several small scattered accessories.

Taking a closer look at the HDZero VRX

The transmitter of the drone is a mini VTX device with a power output of 200mW. While the brand offers a VTX that supports a maximum power of 1W, for the convenience of installation on my 1s whoop, I deliberately chose this mini VTX model that supports 1-2s power. It has a metal shield that serves the dual purpose of protection and heat dissipation.

As for the camera, it is a Runcam camera that supports digital image capture. Unlike traditional analog cameras, this camera uses a coaxial cable design similar to DJI, with multiple pins for connection. The camera’s cable is securely attached with a buckle. The product list also includes a smaller HD camera option that is more suitable for use on smaller drones.

Interestingly, both cameras use nearly identical circuit chip designs, differing primarily in sensor and lens size. The decision to go with the larger camera was made to achieve superior image quality. The entire 1s drone setup, including this VTX, weighs only 43 grams, making it incredibly compact. This weight is one of the lightest available for indoor FPV setups with HD VTX capability.

Installation

The installation process for the HDZero VRX is surprisingly straightforward, much easier than I initially expected.

To install, all you have to do is remove the top cover of your goggles and replace it with the top cover that comes with the module. Then connect the VTX module to your goggles with an HDMI cable. Power both the goggles and the HDZero VTX receiver module simultaneously using a 1-to-2 power cable.

Finally, select the external signal input on your goggles and you’ll be able to view the high-definition image transmitted by the HDZero VTX directly.

During my first experience with the HDZero VRX, I was immediately impressed by the remarkable clarity it offered. The visuals were incredibly crisp and reminiscent of DJI’s digital VTX technology. Even though the resolution is 720p, the clarity is comparable to, if not significantly better than, what you’d see with the naked eye. It’s a significant improvement over analog cameras and really enhances the FPV viewing experience.

In conclusion, the installation process for the HDZero VRX is hassle-free and the results are stunning. It brings remarkable image clarity to your FPV goggles, rivaling the quality of DJI’s digital VTX. Say goodbye to the limitations of analog cameras and prepare to be amazed by the improved visual fidelity of the HDZero VRX.

Real Experience

Now let’s talk about the real outdoor experience with the HDZero VRX. For the flight test, I mounted it on a 1s T-Motor drone. It happened to be a relatively windy day, so I didn’t focus too much on the stability of the drone at first.

Watching the live video on the screen, I noticed that the overall color reproduction was on the cooler side, which gave the visuals a pleasant and comfortable appearance. The screen latency was impressively low, with the remote control and the corresponding flight screen almost perfectly in sync.

To put this to the test, I followed my usual testing method and found that the VTX’s latency was around 20ms. This latency is more than sufficient to meet the demands of racing competitions. It’s one of the reasons why the HDZero VRX is gaining popularity among professional racing pilots, as its lower latency is proving to be more suitable for their needs compared to the larger DJI Digital VTX.

In terms of signal quality, I noticed a notable difference between the HDZero VRX and DJI’s digital VTX as the signal strength faded. The DJI tends to show large areas of mosaic patterns as the signal bitrate drops, indicating a significant drop in signal quality.

The HDZero VRX, on the other hand, shows scattered snowflakes, representing a degradation in signal quality over distance. This serves as a helpful reminder for pilots to return in a timely manner to avoid video loss.

The HDZero VRX or the HDZero Goggles: Which should I buy?

Choosing between the HDZero VRX and the HDZero Goggles is a matter of personal preference and circumstance.

If you’re new to the hobby, or don’t currently own HDMI-equipped goggles, I’d recommend waiting for the HDZero Goggles (which come with a built-in HDZero receiver). This is because using the VRX with third-party goggles can result in messy cabling, and the added weight of the VRX can be uncomfortable during extended flights.

However, if you’re eager to dive into the HDZero system and can’t wait, the VRX serves as a good entry point. You can use it as a backup receiver or incorporate it into a ground station setup in the future. Keep in mind that the availability and quality of the HDZero goggles is still unknown, so the VRX is a viable option to get the HDZero experience without delay.

Ultimately, the choice between the HDZero VRX and the HDZero goggles depends on your specific needs, timeline, and willingness to wait for the upcoming goggles. Both options have their advantages, so weigh the factors that are important to you and make a decision based on your preferences and needs.

This bad boy follows in the footsteps of its predecessors, the TX16S and TX12S, but with some great upgrades. It comes in three versions: CC2500 multi-protocol, 4-in-1 multi-protocol, and ELRS 2.4GHz protocol.

Here’s where things get really interesting. The BOXER’s ELRS protocol is a game changer. You can easily upgrade it over Wifi and tweak all those sweet parameters to your heart’s content. Talk about user friendly, right? No wonder it’s becoming the FPV radio protocol of choice for all the cool pilots.

This design may remind you of the TBS MAMBO, but the BOXER has its own distinctive details. In particular, it offers an ergonomically designed back index finger grip, a comfortable fabric grip, a spacious battery compartment, six convenient shortcut mode buttons and a removable T-antenna.

On the bottom, you’ll find a USB fast charge port that supports QC3.0 fast charging for fast and efficient charging. It can handle a maximum current of 2.0A for 2S batteries.

The expanded battery compartment provides ample room for a 6200mAh 2S battery, providing an impressive 20 hours of battery life as per the official specifications. Even with the additional RF head installed, battery life is not an issue, ensuring you have enough power for at least an afternoon of outdoor use.

Charge Port

It’s a good idea to have separate USB ports for charging and for the simulator. Prolonged charging to 100% can significantly reduce the life of a lithium battery. Using a simulator and charging from the same port can be a problem.

With the BOXER, however, you can charge the LiPo battery up to 90% and then use it for a sim game. Afterwards, you can simply turn off the TX without saving the charge or experiencing a noticeable reduction in maximum capacity over the next few weeks.

Hall Effect Gimbals

The Boxer radio control is equipped with V4.0 Hall Effect gimbals, which eliminate potentiometers and instead use magnetic sensors for greater precision. The AG01 gimbal, machined from high-quality CNC metal, offers superior precision and smooth return compared to the V4.0 Hall Effect gimbal.

For those who prefer the AG01 gimbal, it is also available as an optional upgrade at an additional cost.

Conclusion

Pros

-The Boxer has much better ergonomics than the TX16.

-The Boxer radio’s internal Express LRS module exceeds the 250 mW of power found in the TX16S. It also has built-in cooling to ensure optimal performance even as the module heats up.

Cons

-The screen of the Boxer is not as good as the screen of the TX16.

-The top button on the outer edge of the RadioMaster Boxer radio feels a little rough and scratchy.

I think the Boxer radio is going to be a big hit with a lot of people. It’s a feature-packed radio with multiple switch controls and functions, all in a compact size. Whether you choose the ELRS, 4-in-1, or CC2500 module, it’s got you covered for whatever you want to use. The ergonomics are even better than the TX16s, with a comfortable fit for your fingers on the radio.

Now, there are a few minor gripes that some people have mentioned, like the screen not being as large as the TX16’s and the top buttons feeling a little scratchy. But honestly, these are just minor nitpicks in an otherwise great experience. Overall, this remote is definitely worth your time.

Upon opening the box, I was pleasantly surprised to find a compact storage bag included. The abundance of accessories inside the bag added to my excitement. The unit itself has a soft case with a standard adapter and two ND filters: ND8 and ND16. These filters, enclosed in a waterproof rubber ring, allow you to capture visually stunning slow shutter video with a sense of speed.

Image Quality

While the camera’s parameters support shooting in 4K at 60fps, the video quality also depends on the bit rate. Some capture devices may claim to support 4K, but if the bit rate is insufficient, the resulting video quality may be poor even at 4K resolution.

Now we have a look at the camera’s image quality performance in real-world photos and videos.

Looking at the screenshots, it is clear that the Caddx Walnut camera excels at capturing high clarity and sharpness in 4K mode. The photos taken under favorable daylight conditions show remarkable clarity, vibrant color saturation, and a pleasing overall appearance.

The FC And ESC、VTX

Because it uses an analog VTX, the screen resolution may not be exceptionally high, reminiscent of the vintage TV experience of the 80s. In cases of weak signal reception, a snowflake-like pattern may appear as a signal warning, alerting the pilot to prepare to return.

The Battery

The battery for this drone is equipped with a circuit protection board that effectively prevents overcharging and overdischarging. This solves the common problem that 1s batteries in conventional FPV drones are not durable. Without the circuit protection board, the batteries are prone to overdischarge, causing them to bulge and become unusable.

The inclusion of this feature ensures the longevity and reliability of the battery, providing a more robust and safer power solution.

The Manual

I was also pleasantly surprised by the design of the manual. It surpasses other FPV brands with its comprehensive and detailed instructions. The manual is a comprehensive booklet with clear explanations in both English and Chinese. The attention to detail is commendable.

With the app installed on your phone, you can effortlessly configure the drone without the need for extensive knowledge of theoretical principles.The app interface for this mini drone features a user-friendly graphical design that makes it easy to adjust various settings such as speed, control preferences (left or right hand), and overall flight feel according to the player’s needs.

Flying Experience

Once you have successfully bound the software to the drone, you can use the Charge Manager to fully charge all four batteries. With the batteries charged, you are now ready to take off and begin your flying adventure.

Just plug in the battery and the Stargazer will power up automatically. The flight controller, VTX, and camera will begin to function, and as soon as you put on the goggles, you’ll see the image being transmitted in real time.

If the remote control and airplane are successfully synchronized, you can initiate takeoff after completing the frequency setup.

The remote’s built-in vibration motor provides prompts for various modes, such as gear changes, out-of-control situations, and takeoff. This seamless interaction creates a friendly and integrated experience that makes you feel truly connected to your remote and your aircraft.

To start the motor, simply long press the start button and gently push the throttle to take off. The built-in barometer allows the flight controller to approximate the drone’s altitude based on barometric pressure, providing a degree of altitude stabilization.

It’s important to note, however, that this feature does not compare to DJI’s advanced capabilities. Due to its compact size, the drone does not have GPS functionality and can only maintain a relatively stable altitude indoors.

The initial speed is deliberately set at a moderate level, allowing beginners to gradually get used to the responsiveness of the joystick and master the flight dynamics of the drone.

Overall control of the drone is effortless, and considering my first experience with a tinywhoop three years ago, this mini drone offers a remarkable leap forward in terms of user experience.

With the first-person view and compact size, I can effortlessly navigate and launch in a variety of tight spaces. From squeezing through lamp gaps, to maneuvering between chair openings, to performing quick turns in the kitchen, my home becomes an exciting mini airfield. The challenge is immensely enjoyable because it doesn’t require the same expansive areas as larger 5-inch drones.

Of course, the occasional crash is inevitable, and I experienced several during my challenges. However, the drone remained resilient and showed no signs of damage or frame cracks. By simply reinserting the batteries, I was able to quickly resume flight without any adverse effects.

I also did an outdoor test. Initially, the speed adjustment was moderate, resulting in some instability during outdoor flights.

However, after adjusting the speed in the app, the performance improved slightly, allowing for smoother flights within the confines of the courtyard. Overall, I find the indoor flight experience to be more enjoyable and satisfying than outdoor flights.

By the way, if you do lose your drone, you can activate the rescue mode of the remote control, which will make the drone emit a beeping sound, making it easier to locate. However, it is important to note that due to its small size, it is advisable to avoid flying in areas with dense vegetation, as locating the drone after loss in such environments can be quite challenging.

Conclusion

Great efforts have been made to provide beginners with an excellent FPV experience through this mini drone.

The combination of application software and hardware lowers the learning threshold, while standardized production enhances pilot-friendly features. Design innovations such as modularity and blade protection reflect meticulousness.

However, the analog video transmitter reduces the user experience compared to HD transmitters. The $400 price is a deal killer when you consider R&D costs, tooling, and imported Japanese motors. If price is not an issue, this is an excellent beginner’s kit.

How the FPV VTX works

It works by receiving the video signal from the FPV camera and transmitting it wirelessly to the FPV goggles or receiver on the ground.

The VTX takes the analog or digital video signal from the camera and modulates it to a specific radio frequency. This frequency is then transmitted through the VTX antenna to be received by the corresponding receiver. The receiver, such as FPV goggles or a ground station, picks up the transmitted signal and displays the live video feed in real time.

The VTX offers several adjustable settings, including transmit power (measured in milliwatts or watts), frequency channels, and sometimes even the ability to change the video output format (analog or digital). These settings allow pilots to optimize the VTX’s performance based on the specific requirements of their FPV setup, such as adjusting the transmit power to achieve a balance between range and battery consumption.

It’s important to note that the VTX operates within specific frequency bands designated for FPV use to avoid interference with other radio systems. Pilots must ensure that they are using compatible frequencies and comply with local regulations and guidelines regarding FPV transmit power and frequency usage.

Image Quality for Analog and Digital FPV Systems

Digital FPV systems offer a significant advantage in image quality, surpassing the traditionally softer image of analog systems. The sharpness of a digital FPV image is especially evident when compared to an analog system, such as the noticeably superior feed from a DJI FPV Drone. The improved image quality not only enhances the pilot’s immersion and overall experience, but also helps identify challenging elements such as ghost branches.

Analog Image Quality

An analog camera generates a video signal for each horizontal line, accompanied by a pulse indicating the start of the signal for the next line. The goggles interprets these signals to determine the color, brightness, and contrast of each pixel.

Due to the continuous nature of analog signals, there may be some bleed-over of the signal intended for a particular pixel into its neighboring pixels.

For example, when transitioning from a black pixel to a white pixel in a video line, the analog signal cannot immediately switch to the new color, but instead blends into it.This blending can introduce a gray pixel between the black and white transition, visually reducing sharpness.

You can observe this effect by printing out a camera focus chart and pointing your FPV camera at it. If the black and white are close enough, the camera will show gray. Although digital images can also show this effect to some extent, it is less pronounced.

While some high quality analog cameras can produce sharp images, digital images are still far superior.

Digital Image Quality

Compared to analog systems, digital FPV systems assign specific color, brightness, and contrast information to each pixel individually. Unlike analog systems that merge the information together, digital systems keep the data separate. This separation is achieved by the discrete nature of digital signals.

Signal Quality for Analog and Digital FPV Systems

The quality and range of FPV signals are primarily affected by the quality and placement of the antennas and the accuracy of the VTX in transmitting at the intended frequency.

High-quality analog VTXs provide more accurate transmit frequencies and cleaner signals, resulting in less interference with neighboring channels. Antennas should be designed and tuned for specific frequency ranges.

Some digital VTXs offer dual antennas (diversity) that can be mounted at a 90-degree angle. This setup improves signal quality regardless of the aircraft’s attitude during flight.

Types of FPV Antennas

Omnidirectional video antenna

When it comes to video antennas, there are three key points to consider.

First, antennas come in left-handed (LHCP) and right-handed (RHCP) versions, and it’s important to use the same type on both your quadcopter and your goggles. Most analog video pilots use RHCP, so I recommend starting with that.

While there is no performance difference, using the same type as others will allow you to see their feeds on your goggles.

Second, antennas come with different connectors. Goggles usually have SMA or RP-SMA connectors, while video transmitters usually have UFL or MMCX connectors.

It is important to purchase antennas with the same connectors as your goggles and video transmitter.

Finally, never turn on your video transmitter without an antenna attached. Doing so may damage or even destroy the transmitter.

Always make sure an antenna is properly connected before powering up the system.

Directional video antenna

If your goggles are equipped with a single antenna port, you will only need an omni antenna. However, if your goggles have two antenna ports, it means they support diversity and you will need both an omni antenna and a directional antenna.

So why don’t all vTXs deliver such high power? The answer is heat. High-performance vTXs generate a significant amount of heat, and without proper heat dissipation, they automatically reduce their output power to prevent damage. Some vTXs use bulky heat sinks and built-in fans to solve this problem.

However, Foxeer has managed to create a reasonably sized and moderately weighted vTX that maintains an honest and verified 2.5 watts of power in flight. This means that if you prioritize maximum range and penetration and are willing to invest in it, the Foxeer Reaper Extreme 2.5W is the ideal choice for your needs.

It’s worth noting that 2.5 watts is indeed a substantial amount of power for an analog vTX. However, in terms of RF power and its impact on range, the difference from, say, 1 watt or 800 mW is not as significant as one might expect. Doubling the power generally results in about a 1.4x increase in range, while quadrupling the power results in about a 2x increase in range.

While its claimed power rating goes up to 800mW, my tests revealed a slight underperformance at the 600mW and 800mW levels, reaching about 50% lower. However, the 200mW and 25mW levels showed good performance and accurate output.

Although it may not be the optimal option for long-range flights, the maximum output of 400mW is generally sufficient for most situations. At only $19, it even comes with a built-in microphone and a convenient 30x30mm mount, making it an excellent value.
